Northwest Missouri State University went toe-to-toe with No. 4 Duke University and fell just short 69-63 in an exhibition to start the 2019-20 season Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, NC.
The Bearcats trailed 28-22 at halftime, but matched the Blue Devils in the second half as each team put up 41 points apiece in the final 20 minutes.
Duke's largest lead of 19 points came with 5:28 remaining in the game. Northwest outscored the fourth ranked team in the country 22-9 the rest of the way, including 12 points from Trevor Hudgins.
Hudgins, a sophomore guard from Manhattan, KS, led all scorers with 27 points. He shot 9-18 for the game, and 7-13 from the three-point line.
Ryan Hawkins recorded 16 points and nine rebounds in the exhibition. Ryan Welty added 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Northwest opens the regular season Friday, November 1 against Daemen (NY) in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph.
